Drive (2011) Movie Review

Drive is about a mysterious Hollywood stuntman and mechanic who moonlights as a getaway driver. He finds himself in trouble when he decides to help out his neighbour.62izpzhnm2ftugfz2n5fp5end30

This film starts off really strong in my opinion. The call and the criminal mission show the
audience where Driver is most comfortable. I love the five
minute rule he gives his clients. In the car after the mission there is barely a word spoken, the camera never leaves the car (wonderful cinematography). I think this is what makes this a very strong scene, it’s different. Driver is a really mysterious character, he doesn’t talk much and we don’t know a lot about him. It made me more curious, I wanted to know more about him. Later on, we got to know a bit more about him and his past through his actions.

When Driver meets Irene, we see him open up a bit. He really starts to love this family. The relationship between Driver and Irene was really superficial in my opinion though. They don’t know a lot about each other. This is one of the things I’ve wanted to be more elaborate. The scene between Driver and Benicio while they are watching a movie is one that really stood out to me. ‘There’s no good sharks?’ Driver asks Benicio. Driver realises what he is doing to himself, he doesn’t want to go on like this, but he gets pulled back into the criminal world over and over again.

The action scenes in this movie are very well done, very well edited. Quick and sometimes even a bit terrifying. A lot of people expected more action from this movie. If you’ve seen the trailer, you probably know why. I don’t think more action was necessary for the movie though. The movie worked out amazingly well without it, in my opinion it made it even stronger because it allows us more into the head of the characters.

Ryan’s acting is something else that really stood out to me. He didn’t have that many lines, so he had to make a lot explain a lot with his facial expressions, and he did a fantastic job. Mulligan, Brooks and Cranston also did an amazing job. The soundtrack of this movie is beautiful, very retro.
The plot isn’t that original though, we’ve seen it before.

There is a reason for everything in this movie, with a lot of little clues along the way (think about the scorpion on the back of Driver’s jacket).

Overall, this is a must-see movie if you like mysterious, crime and wonderful directed movies.
